Russian Hill Stairways

Neighborhood: Russian Hill

Description

Before Willis Polk revolutionized architecture with the proto-skyscraper Hallidie Building, he spent his days designing relatively quaint, classical homes on Russian Hill. His direction elevated the neighborhood’s aesthetic, inspiring both grand mansions and understated homes up and down its steep grade.

Russian Hill is an iconic San Francisco neighborhood with a rich and varied history. This tour explores its hidden stairways and alleys to learn about the artists, poets and architects that created this extraordinary Bohemian enclave. The tour takes in 3 historic districts, that include many architectural gems, and provides delightful accounts of the people and their deeds that shaped the hill. In addition, as the tour winds its way over the hill, we are treated to fabulous views of the City and Bay, and manage to get in some good exercise!
