Every year dozens of inquiries come into our office asking for information on becoming one of San Francisco City Guides and it is my pleasure to pass along information about how to become a City Guide. Each training course is held once annually and typically starts in February each year.

Please read the information below closely before you return your application. The process for becoming a City Guide is not for everyone, it is arduous and exhaustive at times, but it is also fun and rewarding! That is why so many of our volunteers have been with us for 10 years or more!

The Training Process is designed as follows..

The training consists of 7 non-consecutive Saturdays in the San Francisco Public Library. Each training lasts from approximately, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with a break for lunch. Each training day consists of historical lectures with expert speakers chosen from all of the Bay Area for their acute knowledge of San Francisco's history, architecture and culture. Afternoons are filled with our City Guide taught classes on "how to" give one of our tours to any size group.

Minimum Requirements

-Saturday Training Sessions! Our training sessions are essential to becoming the best City Guide you can be. Therefore applicants must be able to attend all 7 training sessions.

-All guides will be required after graduating from the class to pledge a minimum of 12 tours given within their first year.

-Attend a minimum 6 of City Guides tours during the training process (3 before training begins, 3 during the training period)

-Complete and pass a mid-term and final

-Ability and desire to share preserve and perpetuate the history and folklore of San Francisco while celebrating our rich history of cultural diversity with all our walkers.

-Begin assigned tour within 3 months after the end of training (unless otherwise authorized by the office)

Once a schedule has been established for the next training class, will contact you to inform you of the schedule ande confirm your intent to apply for acceptance into the program. Application Process:

Submit an application. Due to the length of time from when you submit an application to when the actual application screening begins, the CG office will email you and ask if you are still available and interested in participation in this training program. A response is required in order to have your application screened and selected to take part in the next approval process. This email is normally sent towards the end of the year (October-December).

If you pass the application screening, you will get an email from the office about an in-person interview. This typically takes place in January of each year.

Those that pass the interview will be asked to participate in the New Guide Training. The course is normally held only once a year starting in February.
