Sacred Places In San Francisco

Neighborhood: Cathedral Hill (Gough/Geary area)

Description

San Francisco’s Western Addition abounds with houses of worship built to serve growing downtown congregations started in Gold Rush days, that were seeking to expand. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, land in this sandy, windswept area was plentiful and affordable. While some architects used the space to reflect traditional European and Mission styles, others experimented with bold new designs.  On most of our tours, visitors will be able to go inside a modernist hilltop cathedral, a Japanese Buddhist temple, and a domed synagogue that survived the 1906 earthquake.  We also view and discuss the exteriors of other sacred neighborhood places. It’s a transcendent experience no matter what religion you follow.
