Tenderloin Part II

Neighborhood: Tenderloin

Description

The west half of the neighborhood was first developed in the 1860s and 1870s into a neighborhood of middle-and upper-class families. After the earthquake and fire, it became a hotel and apartment house district. Mixed in was the center of the city’s film industry. It was also the scene of bootlegger battles and, after World War II, its last hot jazz club. Find out how one of the 20th century’s most famous literary romances began in this area, and how the Murphy bed was invented in the Tenderloin!
